There is one reason and one reason only that I chose to review this movie. This is hands-down my favorite horror movie, ever. Partly because I have a special place in my cold, cold heart for zombies, partly because it's the final and best written of the Living Dead trilogy by the godly George Romero, and partly because of its continuing use of metaphors and parodies of modern society. (Some would call me cynical) I think the dialogue between the characters was masterfully done, with a couple of exceptions (Miguel being the big one), and the conflicts and motives worked perfectly with the setting. By far the goriest of the series, Day of the Dead also contains my favorite zombie effects. If only Romero had been able to stick to the original script, this movie would have been insane! The pace is fairly slow but there's certainly enough gore and shock value to hold you over until the apocalyptic ending, which is certainly worth the price of a rental alone. The highlight of t! his film for me is 'Bub' without a doubt. How can you not love this corpse? I swear this man should have won an Oscar for his performance. His facial expressions, gestures, body language, all perfect. The experiment with the gun still floors me every time, just that single look on his face when he hears the click as he loads the chamber...priceless. Certainly Dawn of the Dead sees more popularity for a variety of reasons, but I always loved Day for its realism, it's power. How many horror movies do you see where every piece of dialogue is valid, every scene is convincing, every idea shines through brilliantly? In a day of hollywood slasher flicks and horrible remakes it is very bittersweet to look back at this masterpiece and realize we will never see another Day such as this again.
